Dec 22, 2011: As we prepare for our Christmas celebration, it is a great time to reflect on 2011. It has been a blessed year for us. We now serve over 9,000 customers with 10,000 standard and 10,000 custom part numbers. We have broken multiple sales records this year, including each of the last two weeks, and continue to develop new customer relationships, while strengthening relationships with our existing customers. We are expanding our global reach with a new office in Germany, and continue to build our domestic manufacturing strengths with many new machines in our factory. Yet, like so many of our customers, we are concerned about the rampant uncertainty in the various industries we serve; our customers are either low on work, or they are booming and can't find employees to hire. We see mixed signals in the commodity markets about the future direction of pricing, and we are concerned that Europe's debt concerns are a foreshadowing of what our country will face in a few short years. So amongst so many mixed and conflicting signals, our plan for 2012 is to keep focusing on the basics: providing value for our customers, developing our employees and supply base, and serving our local community. Whether you are a customer, or someone just browsing our website, we want to wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas, and great health in 2012.
Spherical Rod End (Heim Joint) Accessories
Dec 2, 2011: A few weeks ago we found ourselves in the exciting position of discussing our spherical rod end (heim joint) product line with our new German business partner (we're opening a branch in Germany in the next few weeks - an announcement with specifics is pending) and found ourselves discovering 'anew' just how many spherical rod end (heim joints) and accessories we now offer. Although we have been manufacturing spherical rod end bearings (heim joints) for 20 years (and importing for 7 years), in having to explain to someone new to our product line its evolution, it jumped out at us how quickly and broadly it had developed. Here are some highlights...
(1) Rod End Studs: We have been offering studded rod ends since day one, but the self-installable Scotty Bolt (TM) rod end stud are still relatively new and came about from a desire to give customers a rod end stud that they could install and thus would NOT have to stock both studded and non-studded rod ends (they could just have some of the self-installable studs available).
(2) Thread Bungs: The weldable thread bungs came about because we had a few customers ask us about them. It is now a major product line for us. Our WTF series comes in 144 different sizes to fit a variety of threads and tubes. These chrome moly thread bungs are also available in kit form with our spherical rod ends (heim joints).
(3) Rubber Boots: Our family of rubber boots for spherical rod ends (heim joints) has exploded with the RS (face seal) style, the RB series (high misalignment boots), the RFS series (studded female boots) and the RMS (studded male boots).
(4) Spacers/Heim Joint Washers: Our MCW series of spacers have been a very popular accessory with our spherical rod end bearings.
(5) Bung Adjuster Nuts: Our BAN series of parts allows the user to adjust a male spherical rod end AFTER its assembled.
(6) Ladder Bar Adjusters. Our LBA series provides a nice extension for spherical rod ends.
(7) Spherical Rod End (Heim Joint) Misalignment Inserts: This family includes zinc plated (HMBZC), stainless (HMBSS) and aluminum (HMBAL) options for high misalignment inserts. The high misalignment inserts are design to fit into the i.d. of the spherical rod end bearing (heim joint) - 2 per rod end.
(8) Assortment Kits: Our spherical rod end assortment kit line up includes metric assortment kits, industrial inch assortment kits, chrome moly rod end and thread bung kits, speed shop chrome moly product kits, super-flex spherical rod end kits (includes nuts, connecting tubes, etc), and then our crazy monster kits - by far the BEST VALUE rod end deal ANYWHERE.
(9) Connecting Tubes: Our plated hex steel (HBT) and aluminum hex steel (AHT) tubes provide an economical means of creating a linkage.

RECESSION PROJECTION
Aug 29, 2011: I read over the weekend that the last recession lasted from Jan 2008 until Jun 2009. At Midwest Control Products, we experienced the recession from Nov 2009 until Mar 12, 2010 - about a 9 month lag. On Mar 15, 2010, 3 days after we noticed our customers were increasing volumes, a team of us met to determine how many people we would need to hire if our business expanded 20%, 30% or 40% in 2010. We grew 45% in 2010. In March 2011, we had a similar meeting, trying to determine how many people we would need to add based on our customer projections of 20% growth in 2012 (we'll grow 28% in 2011). Since that meeting, we have been finding it increasingly difficult to find people. We have increased our employment 31% since the last recession (during which we had no layoffs) even though we have been seeing all the signs since Feb 2011 that our collective industries were nearing their peak. Why do I say that? Because we believe labor shortages, parts shortages, lengthening lead times and material inflation are all signs of a sector approaching it's short term peak output. Being a supply sider, I also tend to think that bust follows boom, and recessions follow inflationary bubbles. When the market tanked 3 weeks ago, we had another meeting. This time the focus was on a different question: do we continue with our plan to increase staff levels by 13% in preparation for 2012 if the market drops 15%? 25%? 40? The answer we came up with was this: if the total stock market correction was less than 15%, we would continue with our hiring plans. If the market drops 25%, we would give it serious consideration. If the market dropped 40%, we would probably cancel all hiring plans. Why? The market itself doesn't effect our business, but the stock market is a good indicator of what's coming; it is the collective output of all industries. What we have taken away from all of this is that we believe our business will begin to see the effects of a recession beginning April 2012, about a 9 month lag from when the double dip will have officially begun, Jun 2011.

TS16949 and EMS14001 REGISTRATION
Jun 8, 2011: We are pleased to announce that we have received TS16949 and EMS14001 registration with AQA International of Columbia, SC. Our TS16949 scope is for tubular products with a specific customer (narrow scope). The EMS14001 environmental rating is for our Industrial Park factory in Bushnell, IL. Activities in this factory include: powder painting, zinc plating, tube fabrication (shearing, sawing, cnc bending, manual welding, robotic welding, threading, drilling, rotary swaging, thread cutting, thread rolling, drilling, drilling & tapping internal threads), pressing of bearings into welded control and shift levers, light linkage assembly, large linkage kits/modules assembly, storage and warehousing of over 3,000,000 ball joints, clevises, and spherical rod end bearings.
THE JOBLESS RECOVERY
Jun 6, 2011: With our broad customer based (over 8,300 now), we get exposed to a multitude of industries. While some of our customers' sectors are still waiting for the 'recovery' to lift their business levels, other customers, specifically those in the agricultural and construction equipment industry are very busy. All of them are facing twin challenges this year: outrageous inflation and a shortage of qualified, available employees. I agree with the common assessment of the challenges, but inflation and a labor shortage are typical of what employers see at the end of an economic cycle, not at the beginning. Even though unemployment is high and manufacturers are hiring, unemployment is not falling, and employers are struggling to find people worth employing. This contradiction is further compounded by rampant inflation. Possible answers to this strange contradiction could include the following: (1) we are actually beginning to slip into recession, or (2) the devaluation of our currency and both new and threatened regulations and benefit costs (ie: health care) are producing a non-typical cross-current in our economy whereby we have little net job creation, high unemployment, and almost uncontrolled inflation. While there seems to be little evidence of this in the media, it's all too apparent in commodities, grocery stores, and gasoline stations. I'd be more at ease with everything if the Fed started raising interest rates - that would at least send the signal that the government wants to control inflation and strengthen the currency.

Nov 29, 2010: As we approach the end of 2010, we're wondering what 2011 holds for the various industries we serve. Our 2010 (ending Dec 31st) sales will close out with a 45% increase over 2009. However, between the currency market uncertainties, and state, federal and national debts, we're sensing mixed forecasts from our customer base. Our largest customers seem to be the most optimistic. Our smaller customers tend to be far less optimistic depending on their region and their marketplace. We're planning on growth in 2011, but more from increased market share than from customers increasing schedules. We still see too many of our customers with activity levels 30%, 40% and even 60% down from 2008 on a part-to-part comparison. Even so, we continue to operate with no debt, monthly profits, and heavy investment in energy savings, new inventory, new equipment, and new product lines.
